I’m in the early replanning stages of sitefromscratch.com. I’ve had the domain for quite some time and have had big plans to make it a very open source centric community. I am planning on starting with some of the more common and easier to setup and manage Content Management Systems first. I will get into the more complicated systems like the ecommerce carts after I get things rolling on the other ones.
SiteFromScratch.com will be centralized at sitefromscratch.com and all the news and announcements will be managed there along with feedback collection. I will have a specific criteria to test the different types of systems by. Hopefully the evaluations and howto’s will help people figure out what systems will work best for the different types of sites they may want to setup.
Let me know if you have any suggestions for applications you would like to see videos for. I’m hoping to make mostly videos when it makes sense. If you are an expert or really familiar with some of the different open source applications and would like to contribute your videos and tutorials, let me know and I’ll let you know what we can do.

I did some reorganizing with my server my blog was on so I got rid of my old content. I just recently reinstalled my Ubuntu 9.04 server that I run from home. I really dig Ubuntu 9.04 server too. I plan on writing an article about it soon. I’ll try and repost my old content eventually but for now this is it. I’ll try and get things a bit more organized again. I really want to do better at blogging and create more helpful tutorials and resources. I’m going to try and put some of my other ideas on my other domains and sites to keep this blog from getting too cluttered.

I more recently have been struggling to try and decide if I wanted a landline phone line at my home, but I knew that it was probably a half way unnecessary cost. I started looking into alternatives and remembered Skype and the past experience I had with them. Based on my research, I discovered by using them I could save close to $400 a year with Skype.

I use a lot of different tools and resources when I consult and help people get their online businesses going. They all have their purpose in the scheme of things. They help in the planning, research, development, marketing, and maintenance. All these resources would help any business streamline the things that they do and prepare them to be a lot more effective with operating an online business. I have found that a majority of the tools that I use or have my clients sign up for tend to be Google owned/operated. So I have decided to list the 18 tools that I know that every business could benefit from using.

First of all I just need to give credit to Dougal Campbell because I more or less just took what he did and made it a little bit easier and more Search Engine ready. All I have to say is that his first WordPress Plugin was pretty damn good, it just needed a little tweaking for the way I needed to use it. The original plugin was called HeadMeta and left a little bit of coding for the custom fields.

So if you are looking for a host you have probably ran into BlueHost and HostMonster. They have almost all the same features and HostMonster is actually about $1 cheaper a month. So I thought I would do the BlueHost versus HostMonster thing or HostMonster versus BlueHost. Whatever your fancy is.

I think the problem with online businesses is that everyone wants to make a million without any investment at all and without doing anything at all. WAKE UP! It’s not going to happen. It’s pretty dang hard to do that. You may start with a cheap FREE solution, but eventually you’re going to have to do some investing in your site/business.

Domain Hosting can be a joke. There are still plenty of people that will still try charging you $25 a year for a domain name. You can very easily find a Domain Host for around $6 to $10 a year. When registering a domain name it’s always cheaper and better for the search engine to register for multiple years. I recommend GoDaddy or 1and1.

A lot of people think that it really doesn’t matter what web host you use and choose a host based on price, but there are certain hosts that often time can make your life easier depending on the type of site that you are trying to put together.

Hosting is broader that you would think. The problem that most people run into when trying to select a host is that they really don’t know what a host is. There are two main types of hosting, Web Hosting and Domain Hosting. Some hosting companies can do both while others are better at one than another.
